De Backer (1921-1990) was a versatile man: poet, prose writer, author of plays and puppetry for children and adults, author of radio plays and texts for radio and television, essays, aphorisms, a musical, a film, a painter, and art photographer. He was actively involved in Ghent's cultural life, organizing art exhibitions and facilitating various events for adults and children. He was also a board member of the Boekuil Reading Club and created an extensive series of photographic portraits of numerous guest speakers.
